Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and concentrate even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
