Gaming chips have been made from a huge range of materials in an almost endless variety of styles since the creation of gambling and the requirement to track winnings. The most familiar materials used today in the manufacture of modern poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylic composite. Clay chips, the oldest of the bunch, have been manufactured in America since the late 1800s.

Back in the 1800s, poker enthusiasts seemed to use any tiny object with value you can imagine. Early poker players at times employed jagged gold pieces as well as chips – primarily manufactured of wood and clay. With the huge growth of online gaming and specialty television shows, public interest in poker has accelerated faster than ever before. Most people are initially introduced to poker by TV showssuch as "Celebrity Poker" or "Poker After Dark," and many will participate in their first hands on the internet. Despite online poker’s growth, nothing replaces the feeling of holding weighty clay poker chips in your hand, throwing chips into the center of a casino table, or stacking tall pilesstacks of chips after displaying a victorious hand.
