Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would often compete against one another. Howard was able to access some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
